2008 Best Of South Florida

July 3, 2008

Julian Chang

Julian Chang is the newest, hottest, hippest designer you should bother following. Despite crafting fashion for just five years, he’s no flash in the pan here; his fabulous looks have already become timeless in their own right. Take Miami Fashion Week, for example. Chang was the darling of the show, taking home one of the best mantelpieces at the party. Chang launched his own label in 2001 after studying design in Lima, Peru, and joined the red-eye crowd to the Big Apple (which he has credited with influencing his aesthetic) and eventually carved out design ideals all his own. Chang represents both the past and the future of Miami fashion, so we asked him to sit down for a little third degree about his favorite things.

Tell us about Julian Chang.

My collections are always inspired in the Miami lifestyle, the effortless chic — I love to mix patterns and have bright colors in my collections. I believe that if you feel great, that will reflect in every aspect in your life.

Best women’s fashion trend?

One of the biggest trends last year was black-and-white full, short dresses, leggings and flat shoes.

Best men’s fashion trend?

Last year, for men, we saw lots of embellished T-shirts and much more detailed clothing, more prints and graphics, too.

What’s the future of South Florida fashion?

I would love to see Miami as part of the global fashion industry. I think that there is still a lot to do here, but we can all be part of this fast-paced and growing movement by supporting local designers, and just by being more involved with our community.
