Two proposed ordinances, one offering incentives to protect Miami Beach’s historic homes and the other that would limit over-sized homes, are moving through the city’s legislative process. Miami Design Preservation League has been instrumental in helping to create these new laws.
Alarmed by the sharp increase in requests for demolition of pre-1942 architecturally significant homes, MDPL volunteers have spent long hours over the past year examining alternatives to the current laws and offering suggestions to the city staff and City Commission.
The result, so far, is the two proposed ordinances. The Planning Board has recommended the laws and the City Commission is expected to consider them – possibly in December.
It is important to note that these laws can be significantly altered at the commission level especially with a new mayor and several new commissioners.
