Women in Uniform Are Celebrated.
The sixth annual Miami Beach Women’s Conference, in celebration of National Women’s History Month, promises a stellar lineup of women speakers with a theme focusing on Women in Uniform. Saluting the achievements of those brave heroes who selflessly dedicate themselves to protect and defend, whether on the battlefield, the borders, city streets, school or hospitals. The 2014 Miami Beach Women’s Conference will acknowledge the dedication of the women who serve in our armed forces, on our various Police, Fire & Sheriff’s Departments, SWAT, DEA, Coast Guards to Life Guards, Judges, Doctors, EMS Workers, 911 Operators, Bus Drivers, these women deserve our recognition!
The morning panel, which includes a breakfast bar, is free and open to the public and will be held at the Miami Beach City Hall Commission Chambers from 8:30-9:00am.
The Mayor’s panel discussion hosted by Miami Beach’s new Mayor Philip Levine will immediately follow from 9:30 am to noon. Panelists include: Major Brook Cortez, USAF, Homestead Air Force Base; Conni Gordon, US Marine WWII Veteran; SAC Addy Villanueva the first Hispanic Woman Special Agent In Charge Florida Dept Law Enforcement Miami Field Office; Fire Fighter Phyllis Sloan-Simpkins, Metro-Dade Fire Rescue Department and Detective Vivian Hernandez, Miami Beach Police Department.
“We are so excited by this group of women who have demonstrated leadership and activism throughout their careers,” said Wendy Doherty, co-founder of Women’s Exhibit, the volunteer group that puts the conference together. “Each woman has fought important battles in different eras and brings a thrilling perspective about that evolution. It is important to educate young women about the history behind the rights that we have today and our esteemed panel is the perfect group of women to do so.”
In past years, “Lunch in the Garden” featured exquisite food by local prominent women chefs but this year the annual luncheon will be sponsored by the women of Darden Restaurant’s well known family brands Season’s 52, LongHorn Steakhouse, Red Lobster, Bahama Breeze and Olive Garden. Lifetime Achievement Awards will be handed out and don’t miss the Annual Auction. Lunch in the Garden starts at 12:30pm at the Miami Beach Botanical Garden, . The lunch is $30.00 in advance or $35 at the door.
The Miami Beach Women’s Conference was founded in 2009 and for the past five years highlighted the achievements of Women in Government. Past panelists have included women mayors, city and county commissioners, consul generals, a state senator, state attorney, state representative, as well as an Emmy winning news reporter, female activists, a political science professor, lawyers and more.
