News: Nepotism Costs Beach Director His Job

A top official in Miami Beach’s public works department has been fired for hiring his wife to be his assistant.

Duane Knecht, 66, was director of the department’s division of property management.

Interim City Manager Kathie Brooks told the SunPost that Knecht made a “critical error in judgment” by hiring his spouse to be his assistant. The hire was made through a temp agency.

One source familiar with the matter told the paper that Knecht “behaved as a professional.”

“With all the ambiguity going on at City Hall, he must have figured no one would notice. His mistake was making others suspicious. It took a while [for others] to catch on.”
