Profile: Bert E Brodsky

 (Developer of Boulan South Beach)

Who are you?

I am the Developer of Boulan South Beach, South Beach’s newest residential development located right on Collins Avenue and 21st Street.   Besides this, what I tell my friends is that, I’m just an accountant from the Bronx who has been very lucky. I’ve been married to my beautiful and talented wife, Muriel, for 44 years and together we have four amazing kids.

What do you do in real life?

I am both an entrepreneur and a philanthropist, focusing on health care and real estate. Among the companies I founded are National Medical Health Card Systems, Inc., Sandata Technologies Inc., Northeast Equity Management, and Brookhaven Magnetic Inc. I also proudly serve as chairman of the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, a labor of love for a cause I have been deeply involved with ever since this terrible disease touched my family years ago.   I’m also proud to say that this month I will receive an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from The City College, New York.

Why did you choose South Beach to develop?

This was an interesting project that was brought to my attention in 05’, and as we all know South Beach is the golden ring in oceanfront commercial and residential development. Having developed many real estate projects over the years, including in New York’s playground, The Hamptons, I was excited to embark on another development close to the Ocean.

What did you do with the Boulan that will set you apart?

I think it was the ability to preserve the historical relevance of the location, the site of the original, iconic Wolfie’s restaurant, while building a new, from the ground up, contemporary deco-revival residence.  The Boulan is a unique, boutique residential condominium that we believe will attract discriminating buyers from both the domestic and international markets.

What statement do you hope to make?

It’s not really a statement but more a testament to the art deco era that is so ingrained in South Beach history.  Together with our architect, the renowned Bernard Zyscovich, we worked with the city of Miami Beach to create a convergence of historical preservation and innovative, modern construction. The end-result – a magnificent 52-unit, intimate, art deco influenced environment, with a dramatic lobby and incredible roof-top pool deck.

Will you be developing more buildings in South Florida?

I’m always looking for real estate development opportunities.  Of course, there are a number of factors that I take into consideration, and now that I have a Miami residential development under my belt and the South Florida market is really starting to rebound, I have my eye on a few opportunities/gems.

How has Boulan been received?

Terrific! We had an incredible turnout during Art Basel last year and our spectacular grand opening party generated quite a buzz and resulted in a number of sales, which is always good.  We are seeing buyers and potential buyers coming from all over, but especially from the Northeast and Latin America. Brazil is an important market for us right now as well.

Any well-known (celeb) names buying a condo at Boulan that you can share?

Most recently, Irina Shabayeva – the season six winner of Bravo’s hit show, “Project Runway” purchased a residence there. We also have a basketball player staying at Boulan right now but we cannot share any names, maybe later.

Your personal background is in the healthcare industry, why the switch to development?

There really was no switch as I’ve always been involved in both industries! I truly enjoy the diversity of my varied business ventures. And, I get the added joy and satisfaction of having my family actively involved in the day-to-day operations of numerous business projects.

What is the one thing we should know about you?

I am all about family – my family is the most important thing in the world to me.  I try to enjoy life to its fullest and have learned to accept all its ups and downs.  While all the time sharing the love and affection of my seven grand children and my eight children. See even my son and daughters in law are my kids.

What do you do now, that you did not do 5 years ago?

I spend more quality time with my seven grandchildren.  What can I say – you ask me a question like this and I immediately think family.  What a gift this is.  Getting older does have its rewards, you know.

What passion have you had that you have accomplished?

I honestly do come from a humble background in the Bronx.  We were not well to do by any stretch, but we loved and supported each other with a fierce commitment and determination.  I know that I have always had this drive to succeed.  I am what you might call a business junkie and serial entrepreneur. Also, at this stage of my life, I derive great joy and satisfaction from my philanthropic activities.  I have the opportunity and the means to give something back to a society that has allowed me to thrive and prosper.  This is my passion.

If you had to move to a deserted island what 2 items would you take?

A large boat to bring my family with me.  And, a larger boat to tow us all home.

Something new that you have just discovered about yourself?

I found that I can actually relax and smell the roses.
