Profile: Karelle Levy

Who are you? Some call me the stitchin’ bitch…. I’m am a Miami Knitter.  I’ve been making not your typical grandma’s knits for years, form fitting dresses and separates that are unique, body conscience, wearable, fabulous.

What do you do in real life? Lately, I’ve been making clothes by order on the spot.  It’s a project called KREL 2 go, Quickie Couture. It’s a traveled all over the world and I’ve made close to 1000 quickies to date.  It is been the best creative and collaborative project to date.  Anyone can get anything made on the spot in less than an hour.  From babies to grandmas, men, women, kids, & pets!  I’m making my fabrics work with everyone and everything

I knit and design fabric.  I make and use fabrics that are worn on the body.  I work mainly with cotton and so the fabrics are great for Miami all year round.  Though I do work with everything from wool to glowing yarns, I really try to make unique combinations in fabric construction.  At the base, I’m a textile designer and what results are a beautiful array of fabrics worn on the body that enhance the figure and the person wearing it.  My presentations are usually seen through performance art, where the audience experiences the creations in as a moving painting.

What do you like most about what you do? I love creating unique fabrics out of a variety of materials, like fuzzy contrasting with sparkles and sheen. The interaction between them and the people who wear and appreciate them is magical.

How do you get creative? Motivation comes from deadlines of projects.  I work on a case by case basis…. I love deadlines…

What’s inspiring you now? The city of New York is inspiring me now…. The lights the speed of the city and the energy of the people. It’s the total opposite of Miami.

What is your most favorite piece that you have created? I think it would be my glow in the dark/ UVreactive line called DiscGlo. The Ghost piece in particular one shoulder dress that glows so well in the dark it may as well be a ghost.

Who are your current style icons or muses? Karl Lagerfeld is a fashion God! Marilyn Monroe was a voluptuous sex pot.

What are the trends for Summer that you are following? Bright colors are great for summer.  They show a life that comes from the dreary winter.  I was in NY a lot this winter, and the cold kept everything really muted.   Dark colors absorb the warm light of the sun, but this summer is going to be very playful…. And everyone is ready to burst out!

How would you describe your personal style? Chic with an eclectic twist.

What do you do now, that you did not do 5 years ago? I spa.I finally learned to relax a little bit so I can work better.

What dream have you had that you have accomplished? My company is my baby, she’s grown so much I’m so proud.

If you had to move to a deserted island what 2 items would you take? Yarn and needles.

Something new, that you have just discovered about yourself? I’m not wonder woman, I can’t go go go with out crashing anymore.

What are your guilty pleasures? Dark chocolate.

One luxury that you cannot live without? Traveling to as many places as possible.  I’m kind of addicted to new places and people.

Three Words to describe you? Adventurous, Stern, Creative  –  Photo: / Mitchell Zachs
