(Discovery Miami Beach)
Who are you? We the creators of Discovery Miami Beach, a self-guided audio tour that allows our customers to explore 29 of the best locations that Miami Beach (past and present) has to offer. We also wanted our guide to be authentic so we chose a panel of eight “Miami experts” – artists, historians, celebrities and architecture buffs – to give their first-hand insights of this popular international destination. To answer the original question, you could say we are “connectors” of people with the Magic City surrounding them.
What do you do in real life? M - I own a law firm Bratter Krieger LLP, which specializes in Immigration, Corporate and Real Estate Law and both Jacky and I are partners in Playground Maps, a custom publishing company that produces illustrated maps and guides in destinations around the world as well as for different businesses.
What do you like most about what you do? M – Working with great partners like the Miami Design and Preservation League, Big Bus, and Deco Bike, all leaders in their relative fields. I like the challenge of producing something new and creative that can benefit the city of Miami Beach, preserve the wonderful history of this city and be enjoyed by people from all over the world.
How did you come up with the concept? M - We currently operate several other tours in Puerto Rico and really enjoy working with technology; the audio tour industry is constantly evolving.
Why Self-guided versus person guided? J - This allows individuals to take the tour on their own time schedule and in their own way. We wanted people to be able to experience the locations they were hearing about as opposed to gliding by them. That’s the reason behind the four hour rental period for a tour that technically takes 90 minutes to complete. Stop and smell the roses, or in this case, enjoy the restaurants, shops, and culture that Miami Beach has to offer!
Why Should Miamians take your tour? M - The information on our tour is really unique and has an insider perspective based on the contributors of our tour (historians, politicians, celebrities, artists, restaurateurs). I grew up in Miami and until we started Discovery Miami Beach I had no idea about all of the fascinating history, stories, and events that have taken place in Miami Beach.
What is different about your tour? J - It is given on a state-of-the-art multimedia player, comes in several languages (English, Spanish, and Portuguese) and is extremely affordable, while giving a top-quality tour experience.
What are some of the stand-out stops on the tour? M - Where do I begin? It is all really fascinating to me. I am a huge Joe’s Stone Crab fan and I have been going there for the last 30 years, so working with them and learning more about the history and having their participation was really special to me.
Who narrates the tours? M - The tour features a professional narrator and a panel of eight experts of various fields within the City, including: Seth Bramson, one of Miami’s foremost historians; Miami-based world-renowned artist Romero Britto; public historian for the Miami Design Preservation League Jeff Donnelly; Matti Herrera Bower, the current and first Hispanic Mayor of Miami Beach; and Tara Solomon, former “Queen of the Night” columnist for The Miami Herald who documented the city’s nightlife scene in its infancy.
Are you Miami guys? M - I am definitely a “Miami guy,” I grew up in Miami and am appreciative everyday to live in this great city! Jacky has lived in Miami for the past 15 years, but was born in Columbia, which I hear is great too.
What inspires you? M - People inspire me, I am constantly amazed by what individuals that are focused and dedicated are able to accomplish. As I work with several charitable organizations that help kids, I am always inspired by seeing these young individuals thrive in very difficult environments.
What influences you most? M – The great family and friends that I am fortunate to have along with the great entrepreneurs/ philanthropists of our time.
Where you’ll find me on a Friday night at 10pm? J - Probably hanging out with friends and taking advantage of the great culinary, art and emerging music scene in Miami.
What do you do now, that you did not do 5 years ago? M - So much that I could write for hours, I love learning and am always looking to better myself as an individual and professional.
What books/mags do you have on your bedside table? M - Tuesdays with Morrie and The Week
Describe your personal style like a good friend of yours would? M - Confident yet understated
One luxury that you cannot live without? J – my iPhone
Three Words to describe you? M - Passionate, Curious, and Loyal
