Following an election that saw voters waiting hours on end outside voting precincts throughout the county and state, the Miami Beach City Commission last Wednesday approved a resolution calling for the federal and Florida governments to restore early voting to 14 days from eight, including the Sunday before Election Day.
The statewide early voting period had been truncated by the State Legislature and Gov. Rick Scott. Critics charged the Republican-led tactic was an attempt to curb the numbers of Democratic-leaning minority voters who turn out to early vote.
“Voting should be made easier and not the subject of a political power move,” said Commissioner Michael Gongora of his resolution.
