The only thing missing is the blue haze of smoke. The menu has a sophisticated Cuban flair, and the creative dish names (e.g., the Big Band Platter, Flight to Freedom and Sandoval’s Favorite — Cuban beef hash over polenta topped with a fried egg) recall the passions of the club’s namesake. Au Natural Gourmet Pizza: With 15 years in the business, Au Natural Gourmet Pizza serves a wide variety of freshly prepared pizzas with homemade ingredients, multigrain crust and tasty toppings. Bar-B-Que Beach: Just as the name implies, this restaurant offers all sorts of barbecue bites in a beach-like setting. The authentic pit barbecue offers ribs, brisket, pork and chicken in delightful surroundings that feature tiki-style umbrellas, cane chairs, coral rock, an enormous tree in the center of the room and a turquoise floor. A few of the specialties: grilled Jamaican Chicken Wings ($10); the Piggie Platter (big or small) with ribs, pulled pork, beef brisket and half a chicken; a 14-ounce Prime Rib Special ($16) with mashed potatoes and gravy, veggies and salad. Barton G. the Restaurant: American dining gets a contemporary flair that’s fun and sophisticated. In addition to taste, it’s all about the drama. Creativity goes into the presentation of each dish. Included in the appetizer fare are Coconut-Crusted Voodoo Shrimp, Disco Crab, Sashimi Snow Cones and Lobster Pop Tarts. Entrées such as the Samurai Warrior Tuna, Back at the Ranch Skirt Steak, Chinese Duck Decoy and the “BG” Sea-Monster should pique your curiosity and appetite. Bella Cuba: Cuban cuisine by way of Ireland hits South Beach thanks to owner and Chef Juan Carlos Gonzalez, who opened his first Bella Cuba in Dublin in 1999. Appetizers include timbale of tiger shrimp, yucca and avocado ($8.50) and chef’s house croquettes ($7.95). Entrées range from chicken with chorizo stuffing ($17.95) to Caribbean rack of lamb ($21.95). Dinner comes with vegetables, potatoes or yucca and rice. Try coconut flan for dessert. Big Pink: This South Pointe eatery is popular with locals and tourists. The menu is fairly extensive: salads, hamburgers, barbecue, pizza, etc. The dishes are affordable: less than $30 for a three-course meal. Café Avanti: Replicas of Italian masterpieces hanging on the walls get you in the mood as you await the food, which includes such dishes as homemade mozzarella and Colorado lamb chops with spinach. Café Maurice: Relocating to South Beach after 11 years in Los Angeles, Café Maurice offers a less pricey evening out than its neighbors south of Fifth Street. Menu items include Coeurs D’Artichaud ($5.75), herb-marinated heart of artichoke; Escargots Bourgogne ($9.75), full of garlic, butter and a touch of pastis; and Hachis Parmentier, or Shepherd’s Pie ($12.75), a thin layer of ground beef sandwiched between two hearty layers of mashed potatoes and topped with a parmesan and mozzarella. Desserts ($4 each) include Charlotte Chocolate, Crème Brûlée and Tiramisu. Starting at 5 p.m. every evening, guests are greeted with a flute of champagne and a small ramekin of shelled peanuts. Café Papillon: Described by Rafael Briand as a “typical Old French bistro with antiques and old pictures of France,” Pap’s continental and surprisingly affordable food is far from typical. Campo Argentino: Authentic Argentine cuisine is served at this restaurant, which specializes churrasco and other steaks. Ask about nightly poultry and fish specials. The Food Gang: Executive Chef Howard Kleinberg, who graced the kitchens of Mark’s South Beach, Timo, Wish, Tantra and, most recently, Ivy, has stocked his new venture, The Food Gang, with what he considers “the best products available, served simply as possible.” The food is New American meets Mediterranean, the service is personable and attentive, and the vibe is casual chic with the accent on the casual. The Forge: A fine, gourmet restaurant, the Forge serves some of the best steak dishes in South Florida and has a huge wine selection. Front Porch: Since this eatery’s creation, the owners of Front Porch have aspired to make this Penguin Hotel restaurant a “home away from home.” Their formula: serving fresh food in generous portions at reasonable prices. Il Migliore: Il Migliore is Italian for “the best.” The name fits. If you took this Northern Italian restaurant out of its Aventura mini-strip center locale and dropped it into a South Beach hotel, it would fit right in. Food, service — it’s all that good. Fortunately, it’s right where it is and we don’t have to pay $48 for a rack of lamb. It is the most expensive dish on the Il Migliore menu, but it’s only $24.95. All desserts are made from scratch. Ivy Aventura Restaurant and Lounge: Loungy and chic, Ivy is split into several spaces, including an outside garden. The exotic menu consists of an array of seafood, pastas, pizzas and steaks.
