From March 20-23, Power of Design 2014: Complaints united participants in an inaugural milestone event that used art and design to highlight community challenges and initiate collective problem-solving. Presented by The Wolfsonian–FIU with $200,000 in support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the four-day think tank event focused on design’s role in transforming society and engaging the community by exploring the relevance of ideas embedded in the museum’s collection.
Bringing together world-renowned change-makers, thought leaders and visionaries from multiple fields for lively discussions, presentations, performances, exhibitions and more, the festival was not intended to focus simply on complaints, but on what comes next: action, innovation and collective problem-solving. Knight Foundation provided lead support for Power of Design. Other supporters include an anonymous donor, Northern Trust, Terra Group and its president and CEO, David Martin.
Notable Attendees: Novelist and public radio host Kurt Andersen, political humorist Andy Borowitz, designer Todd Oldham, Pulitzer Prize–winning author Michael Chabon, virtual reality pioneer Jaron Lanier, Wired magazine powerhouse Clive Thompson and Editor-in-chief of Travel + Leisure, Nancy Novogrod, among many others.
